Musings from Frank In Pa.
Frank, of the blog BICYCLE COMMUTING NOW, has written several interesting pieces recently.
The first is about his cycling computer, and one of his thoughts was as follows:
I know alot of people are totally into the numbers, especially if they are training, but for me the commute is the commute. I can do a decent job of estimating my travels if I want. I know the ride to the office is about 4 miles, I know how many days a week I hit it, and I have a good enough feel now for my speed in uphills, downhills, and flat straightaways. So I can do without it probably.
I've had a number of such devices over the years, and I love having one on my bike especailly on the long rides just so I can know how far I have traveled.
Yesterday I took a ride that I assumed would be 50 miles, but turned out to be just over 35.
Interesting to say the least.
I'll write about the ride tomorrow.
Another reason I like knowing distance is for a project I'm undertaking to ride as many of the Class 1, off-road Bike Trails listed by the Orange County Transit Authorities Bike Map.
The map, in addition to not clearly indicating the start, and end points of the rides, says nothing about distances, or current conditions.
I took one ride recently that was just over 6 miles, and will write about it as well.
The article is called Cycle Computer Musings.
His next piece is a series of Bike Photos, and commentary on each one.
Very cool, and if I ever get my scanner to work with my copier program I may give the idea a California twist. :-)
The next piece is turned over to a fellow cyclist from The Netherlands, who tells about his commute to work.
The latest piece is one mostly concerning bike commuting, and begins as follows:
There is no such thing as a mindless bike commute, sometimes that bothers me. Sometimes I want to get lost in the moment, in the flow of the experience. You can't do that on a bicycle or you may regret it. You have to pay full attention all the time, and I do.

I can understand Frank's point of view sometimes on technology. Unfotunately for me, I'm a geek. So I'm also a geek when it comes to cycling as well. I enjoy collecting more data then I could care to know.
I'm currently using a very geeky cyclocomputer that I recently blogged about. I think it's fun to play with numbers and know that I broke the speed limit on a certain road. Or that I beat my time home from work by 3 minutes the other week.
Then other times... I feel like "just riding" and data doesn't matter at all.
Great Blog. I found you through Frank. Count me in a new reader.
