Joy of Cycling in Toledo, Ohio
I came across an interesting article about cycling in Ohio, with a focus on a couple of Senior Citizens, one of whom has never driven a car in her life.
Urban bicycling takes a little work, but it can lead to a satisfying early morning view of a still-low sun reflecting off the Maumee Bay along Summit Street while golfers swing away in the dying mist over the fairways at Detwiler Park...
It may seem daunting to those whose most strenuous use of their bicycle is dusting it off in the garage, but riding to work and for general transportation can be done.
Ask Pat Squire.
At 69, she has never had a driver's license.
She walks and uses public transportation, but for nearly 30 years she's used her bicycle to not only get around, but as a source of friendships and pleasure.
"People will say how they admire what I do, and all I tell them is that they can do it too," Mrs. Squire said.
You go, Girl! :-D
Her older husband took up cycling just to keep up with her. :-D
Mrs. Squire doesn't preach the benefits of bicycling, but does praise its advantages, including the different view of a city riders can enjoy.
The slower pace, she said, gives a better feeling of neighborhoods and of the city as a whole.
Drivers are "tied to the Interstate and don't seek out the back roads," Mrs. Squire said...
And she laughs about "the person who drives home in a hurry just so he can get to the gym.''
