From Now On I Take the Lane!

Take_lane

Riding to work in Seal Beach, on 2nd, just past PCH, yesterday afternoon, I was where I was supposd to be (Or so I thought!), in the side of the lane closest to the curb, but not in the gutter...

When a guy pulling a small boat behind him decided he just HAD to pass me when there was no room for it, and no need, since he was going to turn at the corner anyway! (Yes, that's him up ahead at the corner.)

Thank God for the gutter!

He was halfway past me before I stopped myself so I would not sway to my left, and bump my shoulder against the side of the boat.

I raised my hand in a "what the?" gesture at him (No, not the Finger!!), and reached for my camera. ;-D

As I put my camera away, a Little Old Lady from Pasadena, giving me proper space, pulled up next to me, as the lights began to change, and asked if I was OK.

When I said thanks, for asking, and wondered what the boat guy was thinking, she said she agreed. ;-D

As I continued across the intersection, and over the bridge, I looked to my right and saw the boat guy pulled over, standing outside his vehicle, and raising both hands in my direction, with an angry look on his face.

From now on, when I ride thru this block long stretch, I'll take the lane. ;-D

Good on ya, Kiril!

Riding that far to the right limits your options whenever there's debris or another road user to avoid, so by being farther to the LEFT - about where the right side wheels are tracking on that sedan up ahead - you encourage folks to wait until it's safe to pass.

Remember, your safety ALWAYS comes before the convenience of other road users.
