Using State Grant in Santa Cruz to encourage bike safety

This story comes out of Santa Cruz, Ca.:

After bicycling accidents shot up 61 percent between 2001 and 2004, county officials are using a $273,734 state grant to educate drivers and cyclists.

Key elements include:

1.Traffic safety workshops for middle school, high school and college students and parents of school-age children. Classes will focus on traffic laws and specific problems around school sites.

2. Providing helmets and helmet fittings to about 1,500 students.

3. Creating a system to track collisions involving bicyclists.

4. Expanding countywide bilingual bicycle education.

5. Increasing awareness of rules for bicyclists and motorists.

The grant comes from the state Office of Traffic Safety.

Very interesting.

Apparently the grant goes to the 13 year old Community Traffic Coalition of Santa Cruz County:

The Community Traffic Safety Coalition's mission is to reduce traffic-related injuries, while promoting the use of alternative modes of transportation. The primary focus is on bicycle and pedestrian safety issues. The Coalition educates all road users in safety practices to decrease the risk and severity of collisions, and advocates for improved conditions to make all methods of transportation safer.

The Coalition has been uniquely successful in developing creative partnerships to reduce injuries to bicyclists and pedestrians. Members include community organizations, government agencies, businesses and individuals representing law enforcement, transportation, public works, DMV, education, health and injury prevention, parents, bicycling advocacy, retailers, and manufacturers.

The Coalition serves as a forum for communication between different agencies and community groups, helping to create joint solutions to shared problems and find compromise between groups with conflicting perspectives.

It has recieved numerous state, and national awards for its work.
